UAE protests Iran's attempt to perpetuate occupation of islands
United Arab Emirates-Iran, Politics, 2/11/1999
The United Arab Emirates has protested against Iran's attempts to consolidate its occupation of Greater Tanb, Lesser Tanb and Abu Mousa islands.
A message sent to Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid on Wednesday from the UAE ambassador called for including the issue of "Iran's occupation of the three UAE islands" on the agenda of the forthcoming meeting of the Arab foreign ministers in March.
The message said that the UAE message to the AL chief revealed that Iran carried out military exercises on the islands, a matter which was considered by Abu Dhabi as an escalation which is in contradiction with assertions made by Iranian officials on their desire to end this crisis.
In a statement to the London-based al-Hayat daily, Abdul Meguid opposed the Iranian behaviors on the three islands. He urged the Iranian officials to respond with the efforts advocated by the UAE to find a diplomatic solution to this issue, including "resorting to the International Court of Justice."
