Khaddam outlines Syria's policy
Syria, Politics, 2/11/1999
After Syrian Vice President Abdul Halim Khaddam cast his vote on Wednesday, he said in a statement to reporters that the Syrian people's consensus on saying "yes" to the President express their love for their leader whose "wise policy and principled stances realized stability in the country, maintained Arab dignity and insisted on liberating the occupied Arab lands."
Khaddam added that three issues explain the Syrian people's consensus on President al-Assad's leadership. These issues, which demand from Syria great effort and crucial decisions that cannot be made without President al-Assad, are represented by: "First the continuous Zionist aggression and occupation and the consolidation of the Israeli military forces and plans to kill unity and undermine the peace process; second, the current weak Arab situation; third, the international situation and the pressures being exerted on the Arabs as a result of the international imbalance."
The Syrian Vice President added that the main issue, according to Syria, is how to move from the 20th century to the 21st century with a stronger position, will and capabilities.
Replying to a question on what comes after the referendum, Khaddam said, "Prospects are very broad in Syria because Syria has become very strong and capable to stay steadfast in the face of economic, political and military pressure."
On President al-Assad's visit to Jordan, Khaddam said President al-Assad has sought Arab solidarity, and his decision to attend King's Hussein's funeral comes from his faith in national interests."
On the effect of President al-Assad's nomination on the Israeli elections, the Syrian Vice President said the Israelis realize well that Syria will continue to support its president, and if the Israelis want peace the door is open, "but if they want to go with the Zionist plan," they will face a strong and steadfast people that are able to defend their rights and interests.
