Syria's referendum ends with confirmation for al-Assad
Syria, Politics, 2/11/1999
An official source at the Syrian Ministry of the Interior announced on Wednesday that the referendum in Syria ended at 22:00 p.m. at all balloting centers. The source added the referendum committees started to open the boxes and the results would be announced immediately after completing selection of votes insides the country and in the Syrian balloting centers abroad.
On Wednesday starting early in the morning at 7 a.m., voters in all the villages, towns and cities of the Syrian provinces went to the referendum centers to decide on a new constitutional term for President al-Assad.
President al-Assad took part in the people's referendum in "Adelah Bayham al-Jazeiri" school in the Muhajreen district in Damascus.
One of the unfamiliar and amazing scenes in a balloting center in Lebanon was that Syrian citizens at the Tyre balloting center in south Lebanon signed yes to their President in their own blood on the voting paper after they cut the skin over their heart. Local and foreign TV channels captured these scenes on camera.
Today, Syrian Minister of the Interior Muhammad Harba said in a press conference at the headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior in Damascus that some 8.6 million out of 8.9 million eligible voters cast their votes with 99.9% in favor, and 2.4 per one hundred thousand opposed to the nomination of President Hafez al-Assad for the Presidential post.
