El-Baz: al-Assad adheres to just peace and strategic vision
Egypt-Syria, Politics, 2/9/1999

The Egyptian president's political advisor, Osama El-Baz, stated that Syrian President Hafez al-Assad is still adhering to the achievement of just peace in the Middle East.

Moreover El-Baz said that since he came to power in Syria in 1970, al-Assad has made Syria one of the most important countries in the Arab world, Islamic world and Middle East. El-Baz praised al-Assad's comprehensive and strategic vision for national, world and regional issues, and his non-compromising stance against Israel.

In his lecture in Damascus, an official Egyptian report quoted El-Baz as saying that Egypt, Syria and other Arab states reject Israeli claims on its right to have the upper hand over Arabs and to continue arms embargo on Arab states. El-Baz said that an initiative to hold an international conference could be considered with a friendly country like France, taking into account the terms of reference of Madrid Conference.

El-Baz ruled out the possibility of using Arab oil as an effective weapon in as much a manner as in the 1973 October war.

As for Egyptian-Iranian relations, Baz said Egypt is prepared to improve relations with any state, but after clearing standing issues.
