Hawatmeh tells the story of his meeting with Weizman
Palestine-Israel, Politics, 2/9/1999
Israel Radio on Monday quoted an official in Israel as saying that the funeral of King Hussein witnessed a meeting between the secretary general of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Nayef Hawatemeh, and Israeli President Ezer Weizman.
The London-based al-Hayat daily talked on the telephone with Hawatemah in his hotel in Amman and asked him about the real story of "shaking hands and greetings he exchanged with Weizman."
Hawatemah was quoted as saying, "While I was sitting in a room at the Jordanian Royal place with the Palestinian parliamentarians at the Israeli Knesset, Talab al-Sana, Saleh Tarif, Abdul Malik al-Dehamshe, al-Sheikh al-Tareifi, and Dr. Ahmad al-Tareifi, the advisor of the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, the Israeli President Ezer Weizman and his escort entered into the room suddenly and started greeting and shaking hands with everybody. He started talking about the need for comprehensive peace. I said, 'The problem is yours.' The withdrawal of occupation, the settlers from the Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem and the return of the refugees as well as withdrawal from the Golan and south Lebanon opens the international legitimacy peace. It is the peace which can survive."
Hawatemah added that Weizman indicated the extremism of the Israeli rightists and their project which places obstacles before peace.
Hawatemah added, "Weizman left the room accompanied by Ahmad al-Tibi and immediately he was met by Benjamin Netanyahu and Ariel Sharon who said that they knew that he (Weizman) entered the neighboring room and greeted those whose hands are spotted with blood."
Hawatemah continued: "Al-Tibi told us that Weizman replied saying addressing Netanyahu and Sharon: 'Your hands are also responsible for killing the Palestinians.'"
