Morocco, Culture, 2/8/1999
An international conference on the Jewish-Moroccan legacy will be held this February 25 in the city of Fes (200 km northeast of Rabat).
MAP reported that according to the Jewish community of the city, the conference will be held after the reopening of a synagogue, following its renovation, and will be attended by researchers and historians from Morocco, France, Israel and Canada.
Some 250 Jews born in Fes, Morocco's spiritual capital, are expected for a week-long visit to attend the conference and the dedication of the revamped synagogue that has been listed by UNESCO on the list of the world cultural legacy.
The synagogue refurbishing, which cost around $150,000, was financed by UNESCO, the World Monument Foundation and the Jewish Danan association.
According to the chairman of the Jewish community of Fes, two other synagogues in Morocco, dating back to the 16th and 17th centuries, will be refurbished.
