Mohammed V square to be dedicated in Paris in few coming months
Morocco-France, Politics, 2/8/1999

The French capital, Paris, will solemnly name one of its squares after the great late Moroccan King Mohammed V in the coming months, it was officially announced in Paris over the weekend.

The announcement was made by Paris Mayor Jean Tiberi, while he was dedicating an exhibition part of the events organized on the occasion of "Le Temps du Maroc en France."

Tiberi said Paris, which entertains privileged relations with Morocco's capital and big cities within the international association of francophone mayors, wants to have its share of the friendship binding Morocco and France.

The square to be named after Mohammed V is located at the crossroads of the Boulevard Saint Germain and Quai Fosses Saint-Bernard near the Arab World Institute.

The proposal to name a Paris square after the late Moroccan sovereign was made by the "France-Morocco Alliance" to the Paris city hall.

The alliance had said that the late King Mohammed V was a defender of tolerance and peace, that he led Morocco to independence and that he was chosen by General de Gaulle as a liberation companion.

By naming a square after the late King, Paris will pay tribute to a liberation companion and will perpetuate the memory of a king who sided with the allies to fight Nazism and who mobilized his citizens for the decisive battles that liberated France during World War II, the alliance said.
