Moroccan interior minister: Alternation in power should succeed
Morocco, Politics, 2/6/1999

"Alternation in power, wished by King Hassan II, should be successful," Moroccan Interior Minister Driss Basri told French daily "Le Figaro."

The daily's special envoy, Thierry Oberle, who compiled a special report on Morocco, noted that one year after alternation (which brought to power a Socialist-led coalition government), Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi and the interior minister "still need each other," MAP reported.

The daily dwelt on the "battle" waged by Basri for the referendum in the Sahara, an issue that enjoys unanimity among all the components of the Moroccan political class which all agree that the territory should remain Moroccan.

Touching on the government's program which comprises a list of more than 500 measures over three years, focusing mainly on moralizing and liberalizing economy and society, the daily quotes the minister in charge of the government's general affairs as saying "it is a large working site."

Abderrahmane Youssoufi, leader of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (former opposition) was appointed prime minister on February 4, 1998 by King Hassan II. One month later, he submitted to the king his coalition cabinet made of 40 ministers and secretaries of state representing 7 political parties.
