Jordan: Crown prince assumes power due to King Hussein's condition
Jordan, Politics, 2/6/1999
Jordan's Crown Prince Abdullah assumed power as the regent after he took the oath before the Cabinet, as the deteriorated health state of King Hussein makes him incapable of ruling the country.
In the meantime the current state of King Hussein near death following the failed treatment for cancer has dominated the Arab and Islamic world, and anxiety has prevailed both the Middle East and in the peace process between Arab and Israelis. An official statement stated that King Hussein body organ's have failed except for his heart and brain.
The Israeli prime minister's spokesman said that all Israeli people hope for King Hussein's good health, moreover the Palestinian officials said that they are expecting crown prince to adopt his father's policy, yet Libyan leader Moammar Gaddafi said he hopes that Jordan under the leadership of a new generation can put an end to King Hussein's policy, which aimed at satisfying the US government to recognize Israel.
Sorrow prevailed in the Jordanian street, and Jordanian citizens gathered in front of El-Hussein hospital in which King Hussein is lying, from which the health and condition of King Hussien were announced, and the people spent the night in front of the hospital and did not leave the place, fearing that the king could die at any time.
This comes at a time when Jordan faces difficult economic conditions compounded by a high unemployment rate. the Jordanian dinar lost 10 percent of its value in occupied Jerusalem on Friday as Palestinian bankers feared possible instability in Jordan following the death of Jordanian King Hussein.
