Morocco builds new national library
Morocco, Culture, 2/5/1999

Morocco will build a new national library over an area of six hectares in the capital city of Rabat.

Under a recent accord, the interior minister ceded to the cultural affairs ministry 12 hectares for the construction of the library.

Families, residing in the area, will be compensated in accordance with the laws in force.

The accord was initialed by interior minister, Driss Basri, and cultural affairs minister, Mohamed Ashaari.

Cultural affairs minister, Mohamed Ashaari, described the project as "an important one that have awaited for a long time by the Rabat inhabitants."

The local councils will contribute to financing the project that will help archive Morocco's official documents, Basri said.

The new library will replace the aging one that no longer has the capacity to host the large and precious national documentation and manuscripts.
