Fatchett opposes intervention in Jordan
Regional-UK, Politics, 2/5/1999

British Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Derek Fatchett described his visits to the UAE, Qatar and Egypt as a "complete success." He stressed that London will continue imposing no-fly zone in the northern and southern parts of Iraq.

The British minister said his tour, which came after the meeting of the Arab foreign ministers, was an "occasion to get to know about the results and the real atmosphere" of the meeting and the consequences of the withdrawal of the Iraqi foreign minister from the meeting among the Arab foreign ministers.

In statements to reporters on Thursday in London, Fatchett described his talks with al-Sharaa as "frank and good." He added that the "mature Syrian leadership realizes that negotiations between Israel and each of Lebanon and Syria will be frozen until after the Israeli elections."

He continued that Britain welcomes cooperation with Jordanian Crown Prince Abdullah and stated that it is the right of Jordan to live in peace and stability "with no foreign intervention in its affairs from any side, whatsoever."
