Visit of Canada's general governor to Morocco
Morocco-Canada, Politics, 2/4/1999
The official visit that Canada's governor general, Romeo Le Blanc, will pay to Morocco this February 25-27 will mark a strong moment in friendship between the two countries, said Wednesday Moroccan ambassador to Canada, Abdelkader Lacheheb.
The Moroccan diplomat told the National Press Club of Ottawa that this historic event will be an opportunity to consolidate relations between Morocco and Canada and give them "a new dimension."
He added that this first visit ever paid by a governor general of Canada to Morocco will mark a highlight in the establishment of a mutually-beneficial political, economic, technologic and cultural partnership.
After he surveyed before the club members the present political context in Morocco, he stressed that the Socialist-led coalition government, appointed last March, has set on top of its priorities the sectors of education, and reforming justice and administration and is also endeavoring to distance between the state and citizens and ensure a job-generating growth.
At the economic and financial levels, he dealt with the government's efforts to promote an atmosphere likely to attract more foreign investors and exchanges.
Regarding cooperation between the two countries, the ambassador said the visit will give to Diane Marleau, federal minister of international cooperation and francophony, who will part of the general governor's delegation, the opportunity to review with Moroccan officials various programs of bilateral cooperation.
The ambassadors of Cote D'ivoire, Tanzania and Mali also attended the press conference as their countries will also be visited by the Canadian delegation.
Canada's governor general is the representative of the British crown and is appointed by the queen upon a proposal by the Canadian federal prime minister.
