FAO determined to assist Morocco's agriculture policy, FAO chief says
Morocco, Agriculture, 2/4/1999

The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) expressed determination to assist Morocco in its efforts in the fields of agriculture and natural resources management.

"Morocco has become a great agriculture nation, because it succeeded in meeting the food needs of its population and exporting a considerable part of its output," FAO director-general, Jacques Diouf, said at a press conference.

Diouf left Morocco on Wednesday at the end of a visit during which he handed King Hassan II the FAO "Agricola" medal in recognition of the sovereign's ceaseless efforts for agriculture development.

Diouf hailed Morocco's backing to the FAO for the implementation of its policy in the world and for contributing to the success of south-south cooperation.

He said he was "impressed" by the agricultural choices made in Morocco's five-year development program 1999-2003 and renewed his organization's readiness to assist Morocco in carrying out its options in agriculture, fisheries, forests and natural resources protection.

"I agreed with the Moroccan authorities to establish a multi-faceted cooperation for the achievement of pilot projects and the transfer of knowledge," he said.

During his stay in Morocco, Diouf conferred with several Moroccan officials, including Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi, fisheries minister, Thami Khyari and water and forests minister, Said Chbaatou.
