Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of mobilizing its forces on the borders
Eritrea-Ethiopia, Politics, 2/4/1999

Ethiopia accused Eritrea today of mobilizing its forces on the borders, setting up for an attack on northern Ethiopia.

A spokeswomen from the Ethiopian government said today that Eritrea moved a group of its army including 55,000 soldiers from the borders with Sudan to the border of Ethiopia.

The two countries launched a war lasting for six weeks in last May, in which hundreds were killed due to a border dispute over hundreds of kilometers in northern Ethiopia. Diplomatic efforts were intensified to solve the dispute in the last few weeks within the framework of the possibility of a renewal of armed strife between the two sides.

Eritrean President Assyas Afworki stated yesterday that his country will not fire the first shot against Ethiopia and will adhere to the peace plan of the OAU.
