Al-Chahin: Kuwait's relations with Jordan are proceeding forward
Kuwait, Politics, 2/4/1999

Acting Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Suleiman Majid al-Chahin has stated that Kuwait will not give bases in its territories to train the Iraqi opposition or provide radio stations for the opposition because Kuwait has "other channels to help the Iraqi people."

Al-Chahin also asserted that the Jordanian embassy in Kuwait will resume its activities very soon and that relations with Jordan "will not be confined just to opening the embassy." He added that the chance will be provided for the return of Jordanians to work in Kuwait according to the needs of the Kuwaiti market.

He continued as "there is a chance for our Arab brothers, there will be a similar work opportunities for our brothers in Jordan."

During a meeting at the Kuwaiti Journalists Union on Tuesday night, al-Chahin said that US Undersecretary of State Martin Indyk did not talk during his recent visit to Kuwait, during which he was accompanied by the coordinator of the Iraqi opposition Frank Riccardone, about certain requests from Kuwait concerning support to the Iraqi opposition.

Al-Chahin noted, replying to a question on whether the Americans asked for bases to train the Iraqi opposition, "Kuwait is not concerned with training the Iraqi opposition or setting up a radio for it."

Al-Chahin added, "We have our special channels to help the Iraqi people," noting that these channels are embodied in having sympathy with "our brothers in Iraq whom we consider as victims of the Iraqi regime as well as through humanitarian aid, either in the north or for the Iraqi refugees in Iran."
