Palestinian officer killed, Yassin goes on hunger strike
Palestine, Local, 2/2/1999
A Palestinian security officer was killed in Rafah city, south of Gaza, while chasing a car carrying three armed men suspected of being from the military wing of the Hamas movement, and a young child was killed during the chase when the suspect's car ran her over.
The Palestinian security forces searched different regions for the suspects in the shooting and the police said that the armed men were eventually detained.
Meanwhile, the founder of the Palestinian Hamas movement on Monday in Gaza announced a hunger strike in solidarity with the Palestinian detainees in the Palestinian jails. In a statement with Israel Radio, Yassin stressed that he will continue his hunger strike until the Palestinian government releases Palestinian detainees and key leaders of the Hamas movement.
Sheikh Yassin added that the Palestinian government did not respond to a request from Hamas to release those detainees and did not give convincing reasons for their detention.
