Canterbury archbishop meets Lebanese officials
Lebanon-UK, Politics, 2/2/1999

Anglican Archbishop George Carey called for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions in order to establish "just and full peace in the region." On Monday Carey visited Lebanese President Emil Lahoud, and the speaker of the Lebanese parliament, Nabih Berri.

Carey was accompanied by the chairman of the higher council for the Anglican community in Lebanon and Syria, Rev. Salim Sahyoun, and the British ambassador to Lebanon, David Ross.

Carey said he was pleased to meet with President Lahoud and that the Lebanese leader seemed "very optimistic concerning the future of Lebanon and its prosperity."

Carey added that he discussed with the speaker of the Lebanese Parliament Nabih Berri "peace in the region and the role of UN resolutions in this regard. We stressed the importance of implementing these resolutions in order to establish just and complete peace."

Carey continued, "We also talked about security," noting that President Lahoud and Berri are optimistic but are truly realistic concerning the situation in the Middle East, especially in Lebanon. Earlier in the day, the Lebanese president met with a delegation from the Lebanese Arbitration Center, which plays a key role in encouraging investment and the entry of Arab and foreign investors to Lebanon.

In the name of the delegation, chairman of the Lebanese Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Adnan al-Qassar, said that the newly-established center will be the "reference in settling disputes."

Al-Qassar stated that two arbitration conferences will be held in Beirut. There will be an Arab conference in May and will be attended by Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid and the second is an international conference, also to be held in Beirut, in October. Al-Qassar indicated "President Lahoud's response to our demands."
