Syrian maritime improving as facilities and capacity are enlarged
Syria, Economics, 2/2/1999
Since the 1970s, the two main Syrian ports of Lattakia and Tartous have witnessed increasing traffic, due to the reactivation and development of shipping in Syria.
The storage capacity in the port of Lattakia has been doubled and the docks now number 19. A cement area designed for the storage of containers has been constructed on a 24,000 square meter area. The new docks have been supplied with 16 cranes with a capacity of 6.3 tonnes each, in addition to other equipment. The number of ships visiting the port was also increased, and this contributes to increasing the production capacity.
Cargo capacity reached 3.25 million tonnes in 1997, while the number of workers was 2,700. The port's revenues reached 650 million Syrian pounds (SP).
The capacity of the port of Tartous is 12.4 million tonnes per year. It contains 15 stores for containers and spare parts. In 1997, the import-export cargo reached 5 million tonnes. The revenue was 690 million SP and the number of ships visiting the port was 13,116.
The Syrian maritime agencies company helps in providing services to ships, oil tankers, etc. It also supervises cargo transport. In 1997, the revenues of the company reached 465 million SP.
