Egypt, Politics, 2/1/1999

Egyptian Mufti Nasr Farid Wasel said that exempting the rapist from his crime if he gets married to the raped girl is an error in Islamic legislation.

He said this is error in the criminal law is because the status is completely different from Islamic legislation.

He said, "If the rape was by force, execution must be the punishment if he is married, and if he is not married the punishment must be 100 lashes because the crime here is adultery."

He also criticized the law that deals with lifting the punishment of the rapist by saying that it is legislation that came about because of colonization and said that now an immediate adjustment to the items of this law is needed.
