Dakar hosts colloquy on lunar calendar
Regional-Senegal, Religion, 1/30/1999
Dakar is hosting a sub-regional colloquy on the lunar calendar that will try to unify the dates of the major Muslim feasts.
During the three-day colloquy that started proceedings on Friday, experts and theologians from six west African countries and observers from North African countries, including Morocco, will try to settle differences over the setting of the dates of Muslim feasts.
The colloquy will also provide an opportunity to exchange experience and technical expertise on moon crescent observing, the permanent secretary of the colloquy said. He added that the encounter will be crowned with a recommendation in this connection.
Muslim feasts are set according to the lunar calendar, which depends on the moon observing, which automatically leads to marking the events on different dates in the Islamic world.
