Moroccan journalists' protest movement was successful, press union says
Morocco, Local, 1/30/1999
The protest movement staged on Thursday by the Moroccan print media journalists was crowned with a "great success," the Moroccan National Press Union (SNPM) said in a release.
The sit-in staged by the journalists in front of the SNPM headquarters in downtown Rabat had "positive echoes in the print media and on the second television channel (2M)," the union said, deploring the fact that the first public television, RTM, failed to cover the event.
The union said the sit-in was a "preliminary step for the defense of the Moroccan journalists' material, moral and professional claims."
It voiced hope that the government "would meet the aspirations of journalists through improving their material situation and working conditions."
One hundred Moroccan print media journalists staged a one-hour sit-in on Thursday in Rabat. They were wearing red arm bands.
SNPM secretary-general, Younes Moujahid, had previously said that the journalists will continue their struggle until all their professional, moral and material grievances are addressed.
