Demonstration against US ambassador at Cairo International Book Fair
Egypt-USA, Politics, 1/30/1999
Cairo International Book Fair witnessed yesterday a demonstration against the US ambassador to Egypt, Daniel Kurtzer when he attended a symposium limited to some writers and cultural persons.
The demonstrators repeated slogans criticizing the United States and Britain because of the air strikes against Iraq in December.
Kurtzer asserted during a symposium that his country does not intend to pressure or divide the Iraqi people and that it knows the limits of using force.
He said Iraqi President Saddam Hussein forms a constant threat to his neighbors and to the international peace, as the Iraqi regime wasted through two decades its country's treasures and potential.
He denied that the United States attacked any food storage locations in Iraq and stressed that Saddam Hussein is the one who attempts to starve his people.
Kurtzer added that the US did not wake up one day and decide to strike at Afghanistan and Sudan, but it had the evidence that Sudanese El-Shifaa factory was producing chemical weapons and that both countries are sheltering terrorists.
