Syria: extension for the posts of the defense minister, army chief of staff
Syria, Politics, 1/29/1999
Well-informed sources in Damascus told the London-based al-Hayat daily that a decree released on Wednesday to sides concerned extended the legal age for the one who occupies one of the two posts of the defense minister and the army chief of staff to 70 years old instead of 67.
Both deputy commander in chief of the army and armed forces, and Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Mustafa Tlass and the army's chief of staff, Lt. Gen. Ali Aslan, benefit from the extension. Both men will be 67 years old within the few coming months.
This is, however, the third time when "legal age" for senior army officials before retirement was extended in Syria. It was first extended from the age of 58 to 64 and then to 67.
