Saudi defense minister, Albright stress to Crown Prince Abdullah support for Jordan

Sources close to Jordan's King Hussein at the Mayo clinic said that he is "very pleased over the conditions in his country after necessary arrangements on his succession to the throne were made in appointing his elder son Prince Abdullah as crown prince instead of his younger brother, Prince Hassan (who was removed)."

The sources told the London-based al-Hayat daily that the Jordanian King, "feels satisfied and in great self harmony in light of the recent arrangements which aimed at ensuring the preservation of Jordan's stability."

Meanwhile, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz and US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright held separate talks with Jordan's Crown Prince Abdullah, aimed at asserting their two countries' support for Jordan following the change in the succession in the Jordanian throne.

Albright stressed her country's support for Jordan, expressed during her visit to Amman to offer congratulations to Crown Prince Abdullah over his being appointed as a crown prince at the beginning of the week. Albright said that during the past four decades King Hussein "built institutions for the state (in Jordan) to ensure its stability and the continuity of its traditional policies in the coming phase."

Albright described the new viceroy and Crown Prince Abdullah as being a "not-unfamiliar person for the US," and that he represents an extension for the Hashimite leadership represented by King Hussein.

Albright stressed that the US "stands beside Jordan," noting that she discussed with the crown prince bilateral relations and recent developments. But she did not disclose details on the talks held between the two sides.

On the other hand, Saudi Defense Minister Prince Sultan Bin Abdul Aziz accompanied by Prince Khaled Bin Sultan, with Crown Prince Abdullah to congratulate him on his new post as a crown prince and to assert the support of Saudi Arabia for Jordan on various political and economic levels in the context of fraternal relations between the two countries.

On the other hand, it was learnt that the US on Thursday delivered Jordan at Aqaba port quantities of weapons estimated at US $25 million.
