Mubarak: We coordinate with al-Assad to unify Arab ranks
Egypt-Regional, Politics, 1/29/1999
Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has asserted that coordination is continuous between him and President Hafez al-Assad for the interests of the Arab nation in an attempt to "unify Arab ranks and restore Arab solidarity."
In a comprehensive statement to the London-based al-Hawadeth Magazine, Mubarak added " we coordinate as Arab nation between Egypt, Syria, Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries, and we try as possible to revive Arab solidarity. We are partisans and supporters of convening regular and periodic Arab summits so as to create numerous bridges of understanding among Arab leaders."
President Mubarak said he is against striking Iraq because the Iraqi citizens pay the price and the Iraqi civilians are vulnerable to danger regardless of the attempts made by the Americans to avoid that.
On his prediction for the solution in south Lebanon, following the division in stances of the Israeli leaders on unconditional withdrawal, the Egyptian president said "If the Israelis are serious, they have to implement unconditionally the UN Security Council resolution and quit Lebanon. The Lebanese can ensure security in South Lebanon. But Israel seeks to sign an agreement with Lebanon in order to strike Syria."
Replying to a question on his position concerning the Israeli "Lebanon first" proposal, President Mubarak said he is for an " independent Lebanon."
Concerning relations between Damascus and Ankara, the Egyptian president expressed his belief that the two sides are proceeding toward normal relations. He indicated he felt during his recent visit to Damascus that Syria is careful for its relations with Turkey and that the two sides want the establishment of joint cooperation on the grounds of joint investments in various fields.
On the Syrian and Lebanese tracks, the Egyptian President said there should be negotiations on the two tracks. He stated, "There will be no peace in the region unless Israel withdraws from the Golan and south Lebanon."
