Islamic group at UN shocked by Kosovo massacre of civilians
Regional, Religion, 1/28/1999

The Islamic group at the United Nations Organization expressed "deep worries" following the premeditated and cold-blood massacre of 45 innocent Muslim civilians in the village of Racak, Kosovo, during the Muslims' fasting month of Ramadan.

In a statement released at the end of a meeting on the situation in Kosovo, the Islamic group said it is deeply shocked at the massacre, which is a remnant of the genocide and ethnic cleansing crimes perpetrated in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The delegates of Islamic member countries also expressed full solidarity with the people of Kosovo and renewed condemnation of the crime against humanity perpetrated by the Serbian security Forces. They urged the security council to undertake an action, in accordance with the UN charter, to guarantee the safety and security of all the inhabitants of Kosovo.

They also noted with worry the Belgrade authorities' lack of cooperation with the international criminal court for former-Yugoslavia as a blatant breach to international law, the Security Council's germane resolutions and the Dayton peace agreements.

The delegates of Islamic countries called for a peaceful and fair solution through dialogue between all components of the communities in Kosovo.

In addition to this statement that was submitted to the chairmen of the Security Council and the General Assembly and to the UN secretary general, the group set up an ad-hoc commission to coordinate stances on the issue with other regional groupings and the non-aligned movement.
