Jordanian official: King Hussein risked his life to settle succession problem
Jordan, Politics, 1/28/1999

A high-ranking Jordanian official told ArabicNews.com that King Hussein took a great risk when he left the hospital, although doctors advised him not to leave, to resolve the issue of who is to succeed him after his death.

The sources said the new development and his return related to the renewal of the King's cancer.

King Hussein addressed a strongly-worded message to his brother (the former successor, Prince Hassan) in which King Hussein accused him of abusing his power during the King's absence and acting as if the King would never return to Jordan.

King Hussein revealed to his brother his desire to deliver the succession to one of his sons. Addressing Prince Hassan in the message, King Hussein said, "We have differed, and we still do, over the succession, and who would succeed you. You were completely opposed to this until the time you would have assumed the throne and decided who would have been your successor. "

Meanwhile the Jordanians are waiting for King Hussein's return to make the changes he promised. The Mayo Clinic released a statement yesterday that King Hussein of Jordan has had a recurrence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. The statement, released on behalf of the King's private physician and his Mayo Clinic physicians, said that the King is in stable condition and that his treatment began yesterday upon his arrival from Jordan.
