Yemen, Politics, 1/28/1999
The preliminary court in Aden on Wednesday started session in the trial of six suspects, five Britons and one French citizen of various origins, who were brought before the court and all denied accusations addressed to them, namely "planning to carry out terrorist acts, murder, explosion acts in Aden and forming an armed group in collaboration with the Ansar al-Sharia group and its leader, Abu Hamzeh al-Masri, in London and in coordination with Abu al-Hassan al-Muhdar in Shabwa province of Yemen."
The suspects said that they were exposed to torture, and their defense asked the judge to delay considering the case for two weeks to prepare the defense. The judge delayed it for two days, and the trial will resume on Saturday.
Yemeni security forces arrested six persons in Shabwa province, in eastern Yemen, suspected of being involved with Abu al-Hassan al-Muhdar group in the operation of kidnapping and killing Western tourists in Shabwa province at the end of December.
The Yemeni Ministry of the Interior said that those arrested are three British citizens, including Muhammad Mustafa Kamel, son of Abu Hamzeh al-Masri and one Algerian and one Yemeni.
