Arab League, Iran condemn Knesset decision on the Golan and Jerusalem
Regional-Iran, Politics, 1/28/1999

The Arab League has strongly condemned the Israeli Knesset's approval of a law that perpetuates the occupation of the Syrian Golan and the city of Jerusalem. This law stipulates that any Israeli withdrawal from either the Golan or Jerusalem would require the approval of at least 61 of the 120 Knesset members.

In this respect, Arab League Assistant Secretary General for Arab Affairs Ahmad Bin Hali, who is assigned to the Golan and Arab issues, stressed on Wednesday in Cairo that this law represents a new obstacle to hinder the peace process, and that the Israeli government works to avoid peace requirements.

He indicated that UN Security Council resolutions clearly assert that the measures taken by the Israeli authorities to perpetuate occupation in the occupied Arab lands are null and void, have no legal basis and threaten peace and security in the region.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has condemned the latest decision taken by the Israeli Knesset to impose new restrictions and conditions on restoring the occupied lands in the Syrian Golan and Jerusalem.

Spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry Hamid Rida Asefi said in a statement on Wednesday that the Israeli decision reveals the Israeli expansionist, aggressive and anti-peace "plots."

The Iranian spokesman stressed the importance of putting an end to the Israeli occupation of the Arab lands in the Syrian Golan, Palestine and Lebanon.
