Famine looms over eastern Africa
North Africa, Environment, 1/27/1999
Eastern Africa, which was hit last year by floods, is facing this year famine due to lack of rains.
In Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda, basic cultures were badly affected by the weak rainfalls during the latest season.
The meteorologists ascribe the drought to "La Nina" (El Nino's sister), a climatic phenomena which brought torrential rains flooding cultivations and destroying infrastructures in the West African region last march.
"La Nina" is a weather pattern fueled by unusually cold waters in the Pacific Ocean and usually follows the notorious El Nino phenomenon caused by unusually warm Pacific waters.
