Party calls for foiling plots against Morocco's territorial integrity
Morocco, Politics, 1/27/1999
A Moroccan political party has called the national forces to foil the plots hatched against Morocco's territorial integrity.
The Front of Democratic Forces (FFD/represented in the center-left coalition government) underlined that the strict respect of the Houston accords represents the "sole solution to the Sahara issue."
The Houston accords were conclude in September 1997 under the aegis of former U.S secretary of State, James Baker, who was acting as special envoy of the United Nations secretary general for the Sahara.
The accords set five criteria for the identification of would-be voters in the self-determination referendum that the U.N. plans to hold in the Sahara.
The FFD stressed at the end of a meeting in Rabat on Monday, that any attempt to empty the Houston accords from their essence will be rejected. It added that Morocco is attached to international legality and will always cling to the right of all people of Saharan descent to participation in the referendum.
The FFD secretary-general, Thami Khyari, said during the meeting that Morocco would never accept the manoeuvres fomented by certain circles in an attempt to impose, what he called "a third path" through exerting pressure on Morocco by way of rumors on the Sahrawi electorate that will participate in the referendum.
Khyari urged all Moroccan political parties, unions and all the components of the civil society to "start coordination to face the plots weaved by the enemies of our territorial integrity."
The FFD voiced hope that the referendum would be held next December.
