Cooperation agreements between Algeria and Turkey
Algeria-Turkey, Politics, 1/27/1999

Turkish President Suleiman Demirel, currently visiting Algeria, held a second round of talks with his Algerian counterpart Liamine Zeroual, completing discussions on issues already addressed on Monday night concerning several current regional and international issues.

These issues include the Middle East peace process, stability in the Mediterranean region and relations between each of the two countries and the European Union.

The two Presidents also discussed problems pertaining to "international terrorism and means of fighting it," as well as economic matters and strengthening cooperation between the two countries in the areas of trade, agriculture and industry.

Demirel is expected to conclude his visit to Algeria on Wednesday after signing several cooperation agreements and protocols between the two countries.

Qatar News Agency reported that the Turkish president said his country gives great interest to the countries of North Africa due to their "utmost importance" for Turkey in deterring risks targeting it in this part of the world.

Demirel added that both Turkey and Algeria enjoy the capability of improving joint cooperation in various fields, especially in military industry, tourism education and energy. He stressed that during his meeting with his Algerian counterpart he noted the possibility of improving relations between the two countries in all areas and his regret over the "terrorist acts" which claimed the lives of thousands of innocent people in Algeria.

The Turkish President described his talks with Algerian Prime Minister Ismael Hamadani and high-ranking Algerian officials and parliamentarians as "positive and constructive," Qatar News Agency reported.
