Report: Al-Sahaf may be relieved from his post
Iraq, Politics, 1/27/1999

In its Tuesday's issue, the Kuwaiti daily al-Qabas said that Iraqi Foreign Minister Muhammad Saeed al-Sahaf, who left the meeting hall of the Arab foreign ministers, in a provocative way, is expected to be dismissed from the Iraqi government within weeks, to be replaced by former Iraqi representative at the UN Nizar Hamdoun.

The paper added that al-Sahaf has contributed to deepening disputes between Iraq and several Arab states, due to his "nervy performance" in the consultation meeting of the Arab foreign ministers, talking provocatively to the Syrian foreign minister when he said, "You are members of al-Ghardaqa group. The group of conspiracy and treason."

The Kuwaiti paper quoted sources which its described as "well-informed" as saying that despite the fact that al-Sahaf acted on the direct recommendations of his government, that would not rule out that "al-Sahaf will be the sacrifice for any future smoothing in the Iraqi position."
