United Arab Emirates-UK, Politics, 1/27/1999
United Arab Emirates Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Sultan Bin Zayed Al-Nahyan has asserted the need to establish just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.
During his meeting on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi with the British Foreign Office Minister Derek Fatchett, currently visiting the UAE, Sheikh Sultan stressed the need to resume peace talks on all tracks from the point at which they broke off in order to reach a comprehensive solution in the region.
During the meeting, Sheikh Sultan stressed the need to find an outlet to deal with the Iraqi issue through political and diplomatic means to reach results that provide for lifting the sanctions imposed on the Iraqi people, through implementing international U.N. resolutions and restoring security and stability in the region.
Sheikh Sultan added that the situation in Iraq is grave, especially as, "We see and hear what the Iraqi people are suffering of hunger, poverty and diseases," due to shortages of medical supplies.
He urged the international community to take the situation in Iraq into account to find proper solutions and lift the embargo imposed on the Iraqi people. He indicated the existence of a "double-standard policy" in the criteria used for judging Israel and Iraq.
Sheikh Sultan also called for finding a just solution for the Lockerbie incident, through a "fair trial" for the " two Libyans," lifting the siege imposed on Libya and enabling it coming back to the international community.
He added that the UAE supports and backs all efforts and all levels to find out a solution to all current regional and international problems.
For his part, Fatchett expressed satisfaction over relations between the two countries.
Fatchett added that he discussed with Sheikh Sultan the question of Lockerbie and the situation in the Gulf. He expressed his hope to find a just solution to this question through trying the two suspected Libyans. He underlined the importance of the Libyan government's consent to this trial so as to settle this issue.
