Israeli contacts with Lebanon on Jezzine first
Lebanon-Israel, Politics, 1/27/1999

An Israeli source indicated attempts to make contacts with Lebanon concerning withdrawal according to the plan prepared by the Israeli army known as "Jezzine first" three months ago, set up by the Israeli coordinator in Lebanon, Uri Lubrani.

The Israeli source told Monte Carlo radio on Tuesday that Lubrani tried the mediation of the US undersecretary of state for the Near East affairs, Martin Indyk, in this respect, noting that such attempts have not yielded fruit yet. The source explained that this plan, known as "Jezzine first," is considered an experimental model to follow up gradual withdrawal inside the occupied part of south Lebanon.

Israel Radio on the other hand, said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed his anger toward the use of the Lebanese issue in the election rhetoric by former Israeli Defense Minister Yitzhak Mordechai, the designer of "Jezzine first" plan.

But Netanyahu acknowledged that there are contacts concerning the Lebanese question. No information were disclosed on the content of the contacts.
