Lebanon conducts first successful heart transplant
Lebanon, Health, 1/26/1999
Initial results from Lebanon's first case of heart transplant show that the operation has been a success so far, Lebanon's Voice of the People radio reported Monday.
The operation, which lasted for 10 hours, was performed at the Hammoud Hospital in the southern port city of Sidon last Saturday, the radio said.
Doctors Mohammed Saab and Fayez Abu Jawdeh, who performed the surgery, announced on Sunday that Abdullah Dora, the 37-year-old patient, was in a stable condition.
The patient was under monitoring for a period of 48 hours before the results were declared to the public.
Jawdeh said the heart came from an anonymous donor who had recently been pronounced brain dead.
"The prospects of success for such operations in Lebanon are high, however, the problem lies in the shortage of donors," he added.
With the exception of four such operations performed in Israel, Lebanon is the second country in the Middle East, which has seen a successful heart transplant operation, said the radio report.
