Regional, People, 1/26/1999
Graca Machel, spouse of South African president Nelson Mandela and widow of the late President of Mozambique Samora Machel, who passed away in 1986, has been awarded the 1998 North-South prize of the Council of Europe.
The awarding ceremony will take place on Thursday in Strasbourg, the Council announced on Monday.
The North-South prize is awarded every year to a personality from the North and a personality from the south in recognition for their action in protecting human rights, promoting democracy and upgrading partnership between Europe and the continents of the South (Africa, Asia, latin America).
The prize was equally awarded to Canadian foreign minister Lloyd Axworthy, who will be represented at the awarding ceremony by a Canadian delegation.
Graca Machel, who might be accompanied by her spouse, was rewarded for her action in matters of education in Mozambique and for the care she grants to children in her war-torn country.
