Tunisia seeks to reduce its calf imports
Tunisia, Economics, 1/26/1999
The Tunisian government decided to reduce its calf imports to 3,000 heads in the current year in comparison to 5,000 annually during recent years.
A press statement issued by the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture stated that reducing the imports comes in the policy of encouraging Tunisian peasants to breed calves to guarantee the achievement of self-sufficiency in milk production.
The statement added that the government will support the peasants with 60 dinars for each calf in addition to other support for milk producers, varying from 100 to 300 dinars for each calf.
