Syrian FM confers with AL chief to insure success of Cairo meeting
Syria-Regional, Politics, 1/23/1999
Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa today in Cairo received the Secretary General of the Arab League Esmat Abdul Meguid. Talks dealt on means of providing the meeting a success and to conclude results serving common Arab interests.
In statements to the press before his meeting with Meguid, al-Sharaa said in his capacity as President of the meeting of the Arab Foreign Ministers on Sunday, "Syria is exerting all her efforts to make this meeting a success, not to permit its failure and to restore lost Arab solidarity." The Syrian Foreign Minister added "we believe this meeting is an important opportunity for all the Arab countries with no exception in order to express what is taking place of grave developments aiming at undermining the sovereignty of this state."
Al-Sharaa "expressed his conviction that this meeting is of special sensitivity and should be positively reflected on all Arab countries including Iraq and would eliminate many of the negative points recently emerged in order not to stand as a barrier before Arab states's advancing towards a common vision, aiming at reviving Arab solidarity, preventing a military act on Iraq and lifting the siege imposed on the Iraqi people."
