Israel escalates aggressions against south Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 1/23/1999

Lebanese resistance forces early Thursday foiled an attempt by an Israeli force to advance toward Shaqra town in the central sector of south Lebanon.

In a statement on Friday, the Lebanese resistance said it detonated an explosive against the advancing Israeli force, followed by a confrontation using machine-guns and rockets. The Israeli forces bombarded the outskirts of Shaqra town. The statement said that Israel evacuated its casualties using helicopters.

On Thursday night, Israeli occupation forces bombarded Wadi al-Qeseyaeh, the outskirts of Majdal Suloum, al-Sawanneh, and the northern part of Qabreiha town. Moreover, Israeli gunboats cruised the coastal regions of the south and opened fire using heavy machine guns on fishing boats off the Ras al-Ein coast. A Lebanese boat, "Tareq" was damaged during the attacks.

Also on Thursday night, Lebanese resistance forces attacked enemy movements inside the Israeli and pro-Israeli militia position in Beer Klab and on al-Rayhan - Kassaret al-Aroush road. In a statement, the Lebanese resistance said direct hits were achieved during the two attacks.

On Friday, the Lebanese resistance carried out a series of attacks against Israeli movements in the occupied part of south Lebanon. In a statement, the resistance said its groups attacked enemy positions and movements in Teir Harfa, Balat, al-Hardoun, and al-Radar. The statement reported that direct hits were achieved on the enemy positions. Further reports said Israeli troops continued to shell the mountainous areas of al-Tuffah district in south Lebanon.

Lebanese security sources said that Israeli artillery bombarded Aqmata farm, the edges of Lweiseh, Mleita as well as the course of the Litani river and Nabe' al-Tasseh and al-Rafee mountain. The bombardment was accompanied by machine gun fire at mountainous routes which link al-Tuffah district to the occupied strip of south Lebanon.

Israeli occupation forces on Friday also continued their attacks on areas adjacent to the occupied part of south Lebanon and its western Bekaa. Lebanese security sources said Israeli artillery bombarded on Friday the surroundings of Qelya and al-Dafllah towns and the hills of Jabal al-Daher in the western Bekaa. Some 20 artillery shells landed during the attack.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli artillery targeted the outskirts of Yater, Jabal al-Butoum, al-Mansouri, Zibqin, and Majdal Zoun in the western sector of South Lebanon, as well as al-Slawqi valley and al-Azezeyeh.
