Morocco refuted as "counter-truth" statements ascribed by the "Polisario" to Austrian secretary of state, Ferrero-Waldner, that Morocco was seeking to delay the referendum process in the Sahara. Formal statistics in Tunisia showed that the consumer price indicator increased by 0.3% in December in comparison to its level in November. The annual average registered a 3.1% increase at the end of last December, down from 3.7% in 1997. This is the lowest increase in the Tunisian indicator of the consumer prices since 1972. Go

Egyptian economic sources said a high-ranking Turkish trade delegation is to visit Cairo in March to complete the current negotiation sbetween the two countries concerning the establishment of a free trade zone and discuss what was agreed upon between Egypt's President Mubarak and his Turkish counterpart, Suleiman Demirel, during the Mubarak's visit to Turkey in November 1998. Algerian dailies said on Thursday that four persons were killed on Monday and Wednesday in Shalif district, east the capital Algiers in attacks carried out by the Armed Islamic Groups. Two military men were also killed in a bomb explosion in Masdaq while they were in their car. In the same town, a woman (65) and a girl (12) were killed while they were performing their prayers at a tomb of a relative during Eid al-Fitr in a bomb explosion in a cemetery. Go

The average wholesale price index increased by 3.3 percent in the period between January and November 1998. According to the statistics department, the increase was mainly noticed in the agriculture and industrial sectors where indexes rose respectively by 4.7 % and 2.3 %. Go

Arab League spokesman Talaat Hamed announced yesterday that Iraqi Foreign Minister Mohammed Said al-Sahaf will lead his country's delegation during the meeting of Arab foreign ministers on the coming Sunday in Cairo. The spokesman added, the Iraqi issue will top the meeting's agenda, saying that Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid is to hold bilateral consultations during the coming two days with selected Arab foreign ministers participating in the meeting. The Compensation Committee affiliated to the United Nations in Geneva agreed on the amount of 252 million Egyptian pounds ($84 million) as compensation to Egyptian workers in Ira. This amount will be paid to the Egyptians workers in Iraq to who transferred from Iraqi banks as of July 1, 1990, before the Gulf War. ArabicNews.com learned that these amounts will be transferred next month to the Egyptian Central Bank through the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, which keeps copies of these transfers. Go

The Israeli government continues its expansionist and settlement measures in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights. On Thursday Israel inaugurated a bridge in the occupied Golan Heights.The deputy chairman of the Israeli public works department has announced his government's intention to build two other bridges in the Golan, one in Majdal Shams village and the other in Banias. Israeli radio reported that the new bridge is considered the first of its kind as a "fixed" bridge in the Golan. Go
