Al-Sharaa discusses with al-Hoss, Moussa issues on coming Cairo meeting
Regional, Politics, 1/22/1999

A telephone call was made on Thursday between Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa and Lebanese Prime Minster and Foreign Minister Salim al-Hoss during which consultations and coordination were made on issues to be debated on the meeting of the Arab foreign ministers due to be held in Cairo on January 24.

Al-Sharaa also received on Thursday a telephone call from his Egyptian counterpart, Amr Moussa, during which talks dealt with current "developments in the region, the current crisis between Iraq and the US and the need to reach a united Arab position toward this issue."

Meanwhile, Arab League Secretary General Esmat Abdul Meguid noted a need for purifying Arab atmosphere due to the sensitivity of current conditions, a matter which he said gives the meeting of the Arab foreign ministers due to be held in Cairo on January 24 a special significance.

In statements he made on Thursday, the Arab League secretary general asserted the importance of the Arab foreign ministers concluding a united Arab position that ensures Arab solidarity and coordination and meets the ambitions of the "Arab street" (Arab citizens) in reaching a united position in the face of changes and threats imposed on the Arab states.

Abdul Meguid indicated, contacts he made with Syrian Foreign Minister Farouk al-Sharaa in his capacity as chairman of the current session of the AL council, noting that stress was placed "on the importance of ensuring the proper atmospheres to convene the consultative ministerial meeting on Sunday at the headquarters of the Arab League."

Abdul Meguid reiterated condemnation of the US - British attacks in December on Iraq which unveiled the "double-standard policy pursued by the US and Britain."

He noted in this respect, the continued Israeli violation of UN resolutions concerning the Arab-Israeli conflict and Israel's defiance of UN resolutions as well as its refusal to implement signed agreements including the Wye agreement.
