Tunisia, Qatar for an Arab summit following good preparations
Tunisia-Qatar, Politics, 1/22/1999

Tunisia, and Qatar have asserted their support for convening an Arab summit to discuss "the Iraqi crisis." But the two countries asserted the need for "good preparation for the said summit so as to conclude good results for supporting the Arab ranks and eliminating the sufferings of the Iraqi people."

This was expressed at the conclusion of talks the ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad Bin Khaleifa al-Thani, held with Tunisian President Zein al-Abidin Bin Ali upon the former's arrival in Tunisia on Tuesday night for a several-day private visit.

A Tunisian official statement released following the conclusion of talks said the two leaders pledged to give more impetus to bilateral relations in the economic and cultural sectors as well as in the area of technical cooperation.

They expressed their satisfaction over the progress attained through such cooperation and over the level of dialogue-and consultation between the two governments in issues of mutual concern.

Talks also dealt with the deadlocked Middle East peace process. In this respect, the statement said that Sheikh Hamad and President Bin Ali expressed their "concern over the stalemate in the Middle East peace process." They reiterated their "full backing for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people."

On the Arab Maghreb level, President Bin Ali stressed "Tunisia's desire to give a push forward to the al-Maghreb march in the service of the interests of the region's peoples and their ambitions." Talks between the two leaders also covered the "Lockerbie incident between Libya and each of the US and Britain." A Tunisian official source said President Bin Ali highlighted Tunisia's efforts to "follow up relentless efforts aiming at finding a just solution for the crisis and to end the sanctions imposed on Libya by the UN Security Council since 1992."

Qatar's crown prince and the foreign minister visited Tunisia at the beginning of December 1998 and held talks which were described as "important" with Tunisian President Bin Ali. No information was disclosed on the content of the talks.
