Egyptian minister of petroleum to visit Turkey on natural gas exports
Egypt-Turkey, Economics, 1/21/1999

Egyptian Minister of Petroleum Hamdi El-Banbi is to visit Ankara in the middle of the coming month to resume talks on exporting Egyptian gas to Turkey.

The visit was originally to be held on December 28, 1998, but it was delayed because of consultations to form a new government in Turkey.

Official sources in the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum said that in November 1996 both Egypt and Turkey signed a memorandum of understanding concerning exportation of natural gas to Turkey.

In June 1998, the Egyptian minister and his Turkish counterpart signed an agreement to export gas through pipes in the Mediterranean with a length of 1,200 km and capacity of 5 billion cubic meters annually.

The sources said Turkey is considered one of the largest markets for exports in this field in the Mediterranean region due to its large requirements for energy resources.
