Jeddah hosts 16th tournament of GCC soccer champions
Saudi Arabia-Gulf, Sports, 1/20/1999
The Saudi Red Sea city of Jeddah hosts on January 25 the 16th tournament of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) soccer champion teams, according to Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA.
The 16th tournament of the GCC soccer champions is less competitive than the 29-year-old mother tournament of the Gulf cup which was first held in Bahrain in 1970, KUNA said.
This tournament was first launched in 1982, two years after the establishment of the GCC, which groups Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
The tournament has significantly contributed in the promotion of soccer in the Gulf states. The latest edition was held in Muscat last February.
