Iraq and Saudi Arabia fight it out through the press
Iraq-Saudi Arabia, Politics, 1/20/1999
(Editor's note: Iraqi and Saudi newspapers reflect the position and/or sentiment of their corresponding countries, and that is why this story is relevant)
The Saudi daily al-Madina ridiculed on Monday the proposal made by the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to establish an anti-alliance to NATO and his readiness to draw the charter for this proposal and to formulate a set of objectives for it.
In its Monday's commentary, the paper said on Monday that the alliance proposed by Saddam Hussein is a political, military and economic alliance which defies the challenges of the new world order forces, according to the misconception which has driven Saddam and his mass media. The paper predicted that for Saddam the said alliance has the task to help him in his attempts to continue moving forward in his persistence to escalate "his war of words" and to liquidate what had been left of his soldiers in attempts to defy the "no fly zones " in North and Southern parts of Iraq.
Yesterday, the Iraqi daily al-Thawra (Iraqi papers reflect the government position) has continued its campaign in criticizing Saudi Arabia.
The paper said that Saudi Arabia carries the big part of the responsibility more than any other Arab states towards the US aggression against Iraq in 1991 and its all inflected consequences.
The paper held Saudi Arabia responsible for forcing other Arab states to prevent Iraq from attending Arab meetings. The paper added that Riyadh did not give up such a policy which the paper described as "treason."
They continued that Saudi Arabia acts in a way which inflects damage on Iraq and has put itself in the service of a US plan aiming to destroying Iraq, partitioning it and killing its people.
