New Israeli bombardment as Ireland's prime minister visits south Lebanon
Lebanon-Israel, Military, 1/19/1999
Israeli occupation troops in south Lebanon on Monday afternoon bombarded the al-Tuffah district's hills. Lebanese security sources said Israeli artillery in al-Zaffata position targeted al-Rafee mountain, the woods of Sujoud and al-Rayhan area and the Litani river course.
The sources added the shelling was in conjunction with heavy machine-gun fire targeting the mountainous roads linking al-Tuffah district to the occupied part of south Lebanon.
Meanwhile, Ireland's Prime Minister Bertie Ahern has asserted that his country will continue exerting its efforts at the United Nations in order to establish a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. This was expressed on Monday during the visit of the Irish premier to the monument of the martyrs of Qana massacre committed by the Israeli occupation forces on April 18, 1996, killing more than 100 Lebanese civilians.
He listened to explanations made by UNIFIL officials on how the carnage was committed at the headquarters of the Fiji unit working within UNIFIL. He denounced committing crimes against civilians. The Irish premier will arrive in Israel today on the first visit of its kind to Israel.
