President Mubarak opens Cairo International Book Fair
Egypt, Culture, 1/18/1999

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak will open Cairo's 31st International Book Fair at Nasser (victory) City on January 26. The exhibition will last until February 8.

Chairman of the exhibition's organizing committee, Samir Sarhan, said that during the exhibition's inauguration ceremony, President Mubarak will meet with elite group of Egyptian and Arab intellectuals and the representatives of participating delegations in an open meeting which will tackle key local and international issues and Egypt's condition in the next century, on the political, economic and cultural levels.

Sarhan added that some 80 Arab and foreign countries are taking part in the exhibition this year. Some nine international organizations are also taking part. The main topic of the exhibition is "the end of a certain history and the beginning of another," Sarhan continued, and preparations for the 21st century.

Sarhan added that the exhibition includes the "Intellectual meeting symposium," in which Egyptian Foreign Minister Amr Moussa, Culture Minister Farouk Hosni, Tourism Minister Mamdouh al-Beltaji, Education Minister Hussein Kamal Bahaa El-Din, Higher Education Minister Mufid Shinab and -- for the first time -- speaker of the Egyptian Parliament Fathi Serour are taking part.

On the sidelines of the exhibition a "testimony" symposium will be held. It will be attended by elite Egyptian men of religion, politics, and scholars, including President Mubarak's advisor for political affairs, Osama el-Baz, al-Azhar mosque Mufti Sayed Tantawi, and Pope Shenouda.

For the first time, the exhibition will host movie stars in Egypt and the Arab world and study the impact of their lives and careers on artistic movements in the Arab region.

Among the main actors and actresses participating are Adel Imam, Hussein Fahmi, Yusra and Nour al-Sharif.
