Book on Moroccan typical tree published in Belgium
Regional, Book Review, 1/16/1999

A book on the typically Moroccan argane trees by several authors was presented recently in Brussels.

The authors say the "argane tree" (or Argania Spinosa) is the most original species of North Africa both as regards its botanic and ecologic interest as well as its economic and social value.

Argane trees, which form a forest region, can live up to 200 years and are remarkably adapted to drought and heat. The tree is also considered an efficient shield against desert encroachment and plays an important role in the life of rural populations as it supplies them with a source of income.

The tree grows nowhere in the world except in the southern Moroccan area of Haha.

Each part of the tree is exploited and it used as livestock fodder. Its wood is also an excellent combustible while its fruits, once they are digested by animals who take the glucide-rich pulp and rejected, are used for a highly-appreciated oil used both in cooking, cosmetics and treatment of acne, chicken pox and rheumatism.

Argane-related activities represent over 50% of agriculture returns of the local population and supplies a source of living to around 3 million persons.

The authors of the book, "A Fruit-Forest Species with Several Usages," warn against the hazards facing this rare species and call for more research on the improvement of production, protection of the species and development of the argane fruit usages.
