Garang, El-Mahdi agree on convening general conference of Sudanese opposition
Sudan, Politics, 1/16/1999

The chief of the Sudanese People's Liberation Army, John Garang, and former Sudanese prime minister and Ummah party chief El-Sadeq El-Mahdi agreed to host the general conference of the Sudanese opposition Democratic National Alliance.

Although the place of the meeting has not yet been determined, it will likely be convened either in Cairo or Asmara.

In their meeting yesterday, Garang and El-Mahdi discussed the opposition's status inside and outside Sudan, the outcomes of the visit paid by the SPLA chief this week to Libya and the outcomes ratified by the meetings of the movement in Asmara.

Salah Galal, manager of the state party's bureau in Cairo and the Middle East, said the two sides highlighted the importance of supporting the efforts of the Sudanese opposition inside Sudan.
